Scientists have discovered Cthulhu

TPU specialists presented a new type of bone implant

According to the press service of the Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), the staff of the Department of Experimental Physics of the Physico-Technical Institute TPU under the leadership of Sergei Tverdokhlebov has developed hybrid bone implants based on bioresorbable materials, where new bone tissue is formed in the place of installation. The first samples of implants already successfully pass the stage of preclinical tests.

With the help of such bone implants, doctors will be able to perform the most complicated operations for patients with injuries of the skull, facial bones, as well as patients with cancer. At their core, implants have a metal mesh reinforcement and a polymer that is completely soluble in the body. Some developments of scientists from TPU are already used today in veterinary medicine, and in the Ilizarov Center, one of the leading orthopedic centers in Russia, clinical approbation was carried out and the effectiveness of intraosseous implants with piezoelectric polymer scaffolds (from scaffold - scaffolds, beams) for bone regeneration . The results of the work done by TPU specialists are published in the journal Materials Science and Engineering, and the project manager, associate professor of the Department of Experimental Physics of the TPI TPU, Sergey Tverdokhlebov, tells the following:

"According to the indications in some cases, doctors can already use new implants to treat patients. For example, when a child does not have his own weight in bone, the treatment with intramedullary implants with bioactive coatings that help bone formation is the most optimal. In addition, tests of experimental implant samples for reconstructive surgery of the craniofacial area were completed at the Tomsk Oncology Research Institute. Studies of the medical and biological properties of implants showed their effectiveness and safety. We received a recommendation to continue testing our developments already at the clinical level, our industrial partner OOO CONMET (Moscow) confirmed the readiness of the project for transition to the stage of development work. The first photo shows blanks for implants printed on a 3D printer, and the second one shows titanium implants with a bioactive coating.

It should also be noted that the research team led by Sergei Tverdokhlebov represents a large international group of about 30 scientists from Tomsk, Kurgan, Kemerovo, St. Petersburg, as well as from Australia, Germany, Great Britain and a number of other countries. After the completion of the work, the scientists' further plans include the development of intraosseous implants for the attachment of bioelectric exoprostheses. These prostheses will enable a person to perform the same actions with little or no restrictions, while smart implants will take part in the regeneration of bone tissue.
