The Chinese want to build a solar power plant in Chernobyl

Thirty years have passed since the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, but the thirty-kilometer zone, which was located in the epicenter of the disaster, as well as the territories adjacent to it, remain abandoned. It is impossible to live there because of the high level of contamination with radioactive waste, although some continue to live there unofficially, agricultural and other activities are also prohibited there, therefore there are not so many options for using this territory. Nevertheless, the options are constantly being worked out. Recently it was planned to make a radioactive waste dump there, and now Chinese investors have expressed a desire to build a solar power station there.

In fact, why not? The head of the State Agency of Ukraine for the management of the Chernobyl NPP Alienation Zone, Vitaly Petruk, back in the spring of this year told that the construction of alternative energy sources will allow to effectively use the existing electricity infrastructure in the region. The sun shines there the same way as elsewhere, and it’s never too late to repair key facilities and put power lines in order, which is why the Chinese company GCL System Integration Technology (GCL-SI) and China National Complete Engineering Corp. (CCEC) Deal in 2017.

GCL-SI Chairman Shu Hua said that the partners would try to renew the territory and engage in the production of “green” energy, the socio-economic perspectives and advantages of which are quite obvious. The space allotted for construction is still kept secret, but the GCL-SI press service reports that several options have been worked out, and the most suitable of them are already being studied, coordinating all the nuances. If everything goes according to plan, the Chinese are going to to erect in Chernobyl solar power plant with a capacity of 1 gigawatt.
