We have already seen the icy mountains of Pluto, its flattened glaciers of the plain and many other interesting features of the surface of the dwarf planet. But in the sleeve, Pluto still has a lot of trumps that can surprise us. Last night the New Horizons team published new photos that show us Pluto from a completely new side.
The spiky linear landscape shown above resembles snake skin. Mountains stretch for hundreds of miles, and scientists have no idea how they turned out to be here.
“We will need time to figure this out,” said NASA spokesman William McKinnon. “Perhaps these mountains were formed due to a combination of internal tectonic forces and the sublimation of ice on the surface caused by the sun’s rays.”
The team informally calls this region the Tartar ridge - perhaps because the name "Mordor" is already taken.
In addition, the New Horizons team released the “most detailed color map of Pluto in history.” Its colors were enhanced to emphasize differences in the structure of the surface of a dwarf planet:
In addition, a photograph of dune-like objects at the edge of Sputnik plains was made public:
If you look at the plains of Sputnik even closer, then you can see that they are not so "smooth": in fact, they are full of holes. In the photos below, you can distinguish parts ranging in size from 270 meters:
In the photos you can see something similar to a frozen lake:
