Scientists have refuted the effect of anti-aging protein

A new study showed that protein, which, as stated earlier, rejuvenates the body, actually does more harm, inhibiting the ability of cells to heal itself. In the course of previous studies, it was found that GDF11 protein has a miraculous effect when at the connection of the circulatory systems of the aged and young mice, the “old man” regenerates atrophied muscles and restores cognitive abilities.

Stem cell researcher Amy Wagers (Amy Wagers) from Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts, USA) offered an explanation for the doping effect of combining the blood systems of two organisms. The scientist showed that the injection of GDF11 protein, whose content in the blood of mice decreases with age, helped them to rejuvenate.

However, a research team from Novartis' biomedical research institutes in Cambridge said that in fact the "rejuvenating" protein has a negative effect on living tissue. Scientists have demonstrated that the reagent kit used by their colleagues does not distinguish myostatin protein from GDF11. Apparently, Wagers messed up squirrels.

Myostatin inhibits the growth and differentiation of muscle tissue, writes the journal Nature.

Using a more specific reagent to measure the levels of GDF11 in the blood of rats and humans, the researchers found an age-related increase in the level of GDF11, rather than a decrease, as shown by previous studies. Regular injection of GDF11 into the blood of experimental animals had a negative impact on the health of muscle tissue.

The study was published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

However, to explain why this is happening, the Novartis team could not.

In turn, Wagers believes that GDF11 can have several forms and only the content of one of them decreases with age. Both studies agree that a too low or too high protein content is harmful to the body.

According to her, Novartis specialists first seriously damaged the muscles, and then treated them with large amounts of protein. Therefore, they failed to achieve a rejuvenating result.
