For the first time, researchers were able to create fully functioning brain neurons from cells taken from the skin of laboratory mice.
Scientists from the Luxembourg Center for System Biomedicine (LCSB) at the University of Luxembourg were the first in the world to successfully implant neurons created from reprogrammed skin cells of a laboratory mouse into her brain. For the first time, a similar experiment demonstrated the long-term stability of the vaccinated cells, and within six months after the introduction of neurons into the brain, they were fully integrated into the mouse organism.
The success of this study gives hope that in the near future, doctors will be able to replace the damaged neurons of people suffering from Parkinson's disease and other similar diseases with completely new ones, created on the basis of tissues taken from their own body. Scientists have published the results of their research in the latest issue of the journal Stem Cell Reports.
The research is led by Prof. Jens Schwamborn and Dr. Catherine Hemmer, who have been working on methods of treating various diseases by replacing cells for many years. Of course, scientists will have to go a long way to testing this technology in public, but the members of the research team are very inspired by their success and believe that serious diseases of the nervous system can be defeated in the future.
