According to a recent report by AVG, an antivirus software company, 90 percent of hacked pirated copies of popular games that can often be found on torrents contain malware. Experts report that the popularity of games such as World of Tanks, Minecraft, Runescape, League of Legends and World of Warcraft, which are played by hundreds of millions of people around the world, are often the goal of close attention of cybercriminals.

Analyzing data on hacked games from file hosting services such as FilesTube and FileCorp, AVG concluded that more than 90 percent of the game content located there contains malicious code.

Considering that on average around 330 million people play the above-mentioned games around the world, even if we take 0.1 percent of people who use pirated products, at least 330 thousand players are at risk, on which hackers have the potential to "earn".

Most often, game accounts become the target of attackers, since they can contain very expensive virtual items that can then be sold for real money. In addition to this, hackers also target your passwords, including from bank details.

The best way to protect yourself from these threats, according to AVG, is to refuse to use pirated and hacked products. Game patches should only be downloaded from trusted sources and official websites of the game seller. Another tip of the antivirus company is to use different passwords for each game individually and even gaming forums. At the same time, passwords should not look like “12345”, but if possible contain both numeric and alphabetic characters.

In fairness, it is worth noting that we have known all this information for a long time. But here’s the paradox - we continue to download pirates, set weak passwords and do not really care about their diversity.
