Doctors from Belarus have developed an innovative method of growing human skin from patient cells. At the moment, the skin grown in this way has already passed the stage of clinical trials and is undergoing state registration. The introduction into practice and registration of such technologies takes about two years.
The authors of the study say that the method of growing new skin is based on the extremely high ability of human fibroblasts to regenerate and divide. According to one of the authors of the survey, Academician of the Department of Biological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Igor Volotovsky,
“Restoring the integrity of the skin by using cells. This technology was developed by us: for this, cells are required - fibroblasts. These specially grown cells, identical to natural, are applied to the damaged surface. We select them, and then mix them with the cells of the carrier and impose them on the burned surface. Cases have been described in which people have been affected up to 90% of the skin surface. They were saved thanks to similar cellular technologies. ”
Introducing such a method of growing cells into medical institutions can give a chance for successful treatment to patients suffering from severe burns of grades 2 and 3, and will also help in cosmetology and recovery of patients after surgical interventions, frostbite and other life-threatening conditions associated with the loss of large skin areas.
