In Hewlett Packard Enterprise for quite some time engaged in the development of The Machine, a new computer architecture. Back in 2014, the company announced plans to introduce its development and create on its basis a new type of computers and mobile devices that could meet all the needs of modern electronics. As conceived by HPE engineers, lasers were supposed to be used instead of copper cables for transmitting signals, and conventional RAM, memory cards and hard drives with solid-state disks were supposed to be replaced with memristors capable of changing their resistance depending on the current passing through them. This decision was due to the fact that memory based on memristors is significantly better than modern solutions used in our computers and smartphones. So, two years later, Hewlett Packard Enterprise finally demonstrated the first working prototype of its new architecture.


To unlock the full potential of development, engineers will need a lot of nodes and memory, but the first test results inspire optimism: right now, at the design stage, the simulation of processes shows excellent results. Specialists report that their development is several orders of magnitude faster than conventional PCs, in some cases up to eight thousand times. This is very important if you consider that the company intends to use its experience in this area for the production of servers and other complex tasks. Engineers have no doubt that The Machine will find application in the Internet of things and in the technologies of a “smart” home. Performance is important. Nevertheless, talking about the imminent start of production of such computers is too early. At this stage there are many problems that need to be addressed. One of them is energy efficiency.
