Scientists have discovered Cthulhu

Particles on the smartphone screen can say almost everything about its owner.

По частицам на экране смартфона можно сказать почти все о его владельце

Smartphones have become an integral part of every human life. Some people almost never for a minute part with the "electronic friend." And this means that wherever we went, I visited a smartphone. Remember the episode of any film adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, when a detective in the wardrobe items guessed about the origin, occupation, preferences and place of residence of a person? So, each of us’s smartphone can tell about something similar.

According to a study recently published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists from the University of California at San Diego succeeded on the basis of samples taken from a smartphone to create a fairly accurate portrait of its owner. As you know, a person leaves a lot of traces in the form of skin particles, secretions of sebaceous and sweat glands, molecules, microbes of microflora, as well as chemical compounds from perfumery and hygiene items.

39 people who simply used their devices for several days took part in the research. Then, scientists took 4 samples from different places of smartphones and 8 from the hands of users. After that, the data were analyzed on a mass spectrometer. As a result, it turned out that the data obtained as a result of the analysis of the electronic device almost completely coincided with the data taken from the hand samples.

Moreover, on the basis of the information received, it was possible to compile incredibly accurate “biological portraits” of the subjects. As an example, the article presents the results obtained when analyzing a smartphone of one of the volunteers: a woman who loves coffee, does not squeamish about spicy food, prefers beer from alcoholic drinks, dyes her hair, uses expensive cosmetics, takes medicines for depression, uses sunscreen also traces of insecticides. As the author of the study, Dr. Amian Buslimani,

“On the basis of such traces, you can find almost anything, but to identify a person at 100%, as if by fingerprints, chemical analysis does not yet allow. On the other hand, the data obtained can now be used in forensic science, as well as, for example, in medical practice, in order to monitor the treatment of patients. ”
