The team of physicists was able to hear and record the sound of two black holes colliding in billions of light years from us, thus confirming the latest prophecy of Einstein’s general theory of relativity.
This barely audible sound, say physicists, was the first direct evidence of the existence of gravitational waves - ripples in the fabric of space-time, predicted by Einstein in the last century. It also confirms the nature of the origin of black holes, gravitational traps, from which even light cannot escape.
The energy transferred by these gravitational waves, 50 times more powerful than the total energy of all stars in the Universe combined, was recorded by highly sensitive LIGO antennas. The participants in the LIGO experiment published a scientific paper today, under which more than a thousand people subscribed.
“We believe that this will be one of the biggest breakthroughs in the history of physics,” they said. “Einstein would be proud of us.”
Shabolks Mark, a professor at Columbia University and one of the scientists at LIGO, added:
“Astronomy is the eyes. Now she has grown ears. We have never had ears before. ”
