The sweat excreted by the skin can tell a lot about the state of our body. But earlier on his research could take quite a lot of time. What if a wearable gadget like a bracelet can analyze our skin secretions in real time? This is the goal set by researchers from the University of California at Berkeley, led by Professor Ali Javei. Moreover, they even managed to create a working prototype of such a device.
“Sweat contains very extensive information about the human body. However, this is quite a complex fluid, so we developed a fully integrated non-invasive system that analyzes sweat samples and transmits the received information to a smartphone. Our main goal is to develop an organism monitoring platform based on an analysis of the secret of sweat glands, ”says Professor Ali Javei.
The bracelet in real time monitors the key chemical compounds in the composition of the sweat using an array of sensors located on a flexible circuit. Sensors monitor the concentration of metabolic products of glucose and lactic acid, as well as the levels of electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium. Additionally, the temperature of the human skin is measured. On the bracelet board there is a central processor, as well as coprocessors for analyzing the data received from the sensors.
Based on the data obtained, the bracelet makes a conclusion, for example, on the body's hydration during sports training, as well as on the level of muscle fatigue. The team of researchers has already tested the bracelet, as well as its variation in the form of a sports headband for hundreds of volunteers who performed various exercises during the tests. The data obtained allowed scientists to collect a huge array of data, on the basis of which a special mobile application was developed.
Of course, the project is still under development, so it is too early to talk about the final version of the gadget. However, the current achievements of scientists suggest that the wearable electronics of the future will offer us much more opportunities than the one that is on the market today.
