What we perceive as the Big Bang, according to physicists from the Perimeter Institute, can be a three-dimensional "mirage" of a collapsing star in the Universe, completely different than our own. Traditional understanding suggests that the Big Bang began with a singularity — an immeasurably hot and dense space-time phenomenon, where the standard laws of physics no longer work. Singularities are bizarre, and our understanding of them is very limited.

Our Universe may have emerged from a black hole in a multidimensional universe — a proposal made by three researchers Perimeter Insitute, according to Scientific American. “The big problem of cosmology is the understanding of the Big Bang itself,” writes Nyaes Afshordi, a teacher at the Perimeter Institute.

Three researchers of the Perimeter Institute put forward a new idea of ​​what could have happened before the Big Bang. It is a bit complicated, but based on confident math, verifiable and seductive enough to be considered.

“All physicists know that everything always comes down to singularity,” Afshordi told in an interview with Nature.

The problem, as the authors see it, is that the Big Bang hypothesis suggests that our relatively acceptable, homogeneous and predictable Universe originated in a chaos of singularity that destroys physics. This seems unlikely. So something else may have happened. Perhaps our Universe has never been singular in the first place.

Their suggestion: our known universe could be a three-dimensional “package” around the horizon of a four-dimensional black hole. In this case, our Universe began to exist when a star in a four-dimensional universe collapsed into a black hole.

In our three-dimensional Universe, black holes have two-dimensional event horizons - that is, they are surrounded by a two-dimensional border that marks the “non-return point” of a black hole. In the case of a four-dimensional universe, a black hole will have a three-dimensional event horizon.

In the scenario they proposed, our Universe was never inside the singularity; rather, it was born beyond the horizon of events, protected from singularity. It arose - and remains - as soon as one part of a four-dimensional star, destroyed as a result of collapse.

The researchers emphasize that this idea, although it may seem “absurd,” is based on the best concepts of modern mathematics describing space and time. In particular, they used holographic tools “to bring the Big Bang into the space mirage”. In the course of this process, their model emerged as a solution to the old cosmological riddle - and most importantly - left testable predictions.

Of course, our intuition, as a rule, does not accept the idea that everything that we know has gone out of the horizon of events of one four-dimensional black hole. We have no idea how the four-dimensional Universe can look. We do not know how the four-dimensional "parent" itself became the universe.

But our erroneous human intuition, as the researchers say, has evolved in a three-dimensional world, which can only be a shadow of reality. They draw a parallel with Plato's allegory of a cave in which prisoners spend their lives, seeing only flickering shadows on the wall of the cave, cast by a fire.

“Their shackles did not allow them to see the true world, a kingdom with one additional dimension,” they write. - Plato's prisoners did not understand the forces behind the Sun, just as we do not understand the four-dimensional volumetric universe. But at least they knew where to look for the answers. ”
