Scientists have developed a genetically modified tree variety that is best suited for paper and biofuels. Its processing requires less chemistry, energy and is not associated with large waste, according to the online edition Science Daily.
According to Professor Sean Mansfield of the University of British Columbia, one of the biggest obstacles in the pulp and paper industry and the developing biofuel industry is the polymer lignin, which is contained in plant cells and makes their shell hard. In the production of paper and biofuels, it is removed from wood. This process is associated with high costs of chemicals and energy, as well as the formation of unwanted waste.
Scientists have modified lignin in poplar by genetic engineering to simplify the process of splitting it without affecting the strength characteristics of wood. The changes did not affect the health and growth of the tree.
The study, which was published in the journal Science, involved several universities, two from the United States and one from Canada: Wisconsin in Madison, Michigan, as well as the University of British Columbia.
Meanwhile, researchers from the University of Texas at Austin have proposed making biofuels from yeast and sugar to fill them with cars.
