A 14-year-old high school student was researching how computer science can improve the environment. He analyzed dozens of popular print fonts that are used to print documents, and also found out the amount of ink consumed on a particular font.

“Did you know that printed ink is twice as expensive as French perfume?”, The clever teenager asked reporters on CNN.

Suvir made the necessary calculations and came to the conclusion that it is most advantageous to use the Garamond font when printing, since it is thinner and, consequently, less expensive to use ink. At the school where the young talent is learning, after all the teachers switched to a new font, they managed to reduce ink consumption by 24%, which ultimately saves the school about $ 21,000 a year. School leaders are very impressed with Suvir's research.

Friends and relatives persuaded the boy to send the results of their research to representatives of the US government. Each year, the White House allocates approximately $ 1.8 billion in printing costs. Of course, in the state apparatus it will not be so easy to introduce the idea of ​​a teenager. But if this is done, the authorities will be able to save about 400 million dollars a year on ink alone.

A spokesman for the Bureau of the Press under the US government highly appreciated the student’s research, but also noted that it is unlikely that changes to the already existing system will be made, because in the coming years, the government plans to completely switch to electronic document management and abandon the printed documentation.

Suvir Mirkandani admitted that abandoning the established system is the most difficult thing for most people.
