Miniature human kidneys grown from stem cells

Mini-Kidney

Experts from the Jonas Salk Californian Institute of Biological Research were able to create a miniature version of fully functional human kidneys, growing them from human stem cells. The work done provides a model for future research aimed at improving the methods of regenerative medicine.

The kidneys are by nature very sensitive to damage to the body. If one day a kidney was struck by some kind of a disease, then the full performance of this organ cannot be restored under any treatment conditions. As a result, millions of people around the world are at risk, and scientists are doing their best to find more suitable methods to replace the kidneys in case of damage.

The success of the team from the California Institute of Biological Research will allow scientists to get one step closer to solving this issue. Portal e! Science News reports that miniature kidney cells grown artificially from stem cells are subjected to various tests for compliance with various types of treatment for various disorders. In addition, grown buds will allow much faster testing of a wide range of different chemicals.

“We have developed a simple and effective method that allows you to create well-organized three-dimensional structures of the ureteral germ from human stem cells, which is further transformed into a whole system,” says Juan Carlos Izpusua Belmonte, professor at the SIBS gene laboratory.
