Nuts have healing properties. Eating a small amount of nuts daily can help prolong life, according to a new study by American scientists.
After analyzing the data of more than 118,000 people, it was found that eating nuts reduces the risk of premature death by 20 percent. After examining the specific causes of death, the scientists found that people whose daily ration included only 1 ounce (about 28 grams) of nuts die 29 percent less often from cardiovascular diseases, 24 percent less often from respiratory diseases and 11 percent less cancer compared with other people, writes Livescience.
The work was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The link between nut consumption and longevity was observed even after taking into account health-related factors — weight, physical activity, and eating fruits and vegetables.
The findings indicate the potential health benefits of eating nuts, says Dr. Charles Fuchs of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Nuts are rich in vitamins, minerals, unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants, and also contain protein. But because of the high calorie content, doctors do not recommend consuming too many nuts. The American Heart Association recommends eating one handful of raw and unsalted nuts a week, while the Food and Drug Administration advises you to add 1.5 ounces (43 grams) of nuts to your daily diet.
Researchers examined data from more than 76,000 women and 42,000 men working in the health sector. Information has been collected for almost 30 years (from the 1980s to 2010). Once every 2–4 years, all participants in the study were interviewed for their diet and eating different types of nuts, including peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds.
It is worth noting that the study is based on answers that could contain inaccuracies. But, as shown by another study, this method of data collection is quite accurate.
