Graphene - a material that is a form of carbon, has many uses in modern science. Now you can add the ability to work as a radio transmitter to its properties. Researchers at Columbia University in New York demonstrated a microscopic device created on the basis of a graphene film strip that can perform signal transmission in the FM band. Thus, such a device is the smallest radio transmitter in the world.
Scientists James Hon and Kenneth Shepard took advantage of the special properties of graphene (mechanical strength and excellent electrical conductivity) and created a nanomechanical system capable of generating FM signals.
To create a graphene FM transmitter, scientists attached graphene strips from 2 to 4 micrometers in length slightly above the metal electrode. By applying electrical voltage to this electrode, they pulled a graphene strip to the electrode. The resulting mechanical stress changed the resonant frequency of the band, just as the frequency of the guitar string changes as it is pulled. By supplying an electric signal with certain characteristics to the control electrode, the scientists achieved that the graphene device began to emit FM-frequency frequency-modulated radio waves into the surrounding space, dailytechinfo writes.
To demonstrate, scientists have built a nanomechanical system with a frequency of about 100 megahertz - this is just in the middle of the FM radio band (87.7-108 MHz). They used low-frequency music signals (both pure tones and songs from the iPhone) to modulate the one-hundred Hz carrier signals from graphene, and then “caught” this music with an ordinary radio receiver.
The next thing the scientists intend to implement will be the improvement of the graphene miniature radio transmitter developed by them and the development of technologies that will allow embedding such transmitters directly into the structure of electronic chips.
