Light alcoholic beverages during pregnancy do not affect the development of the baby

Published on April 17, the results of studies by scientists from University College London indicate that low alcohol consumption by women during pregnancy will not affect the development of the child.

More precisely, we are talking about drinking, for example, one or two glasses of wine per week. Scientists who made such a statement explain that they could not find evidence in favor of the fact that light alcoholic drinks somehow negatively affect the development of the fetus and the possibility of various cognitive dysfunctions after birth and during the growth of the child.

Scientists came to this conclusion after they followed the social and emotional behavior of 10,534 children aged 7 years. As a result of such an experiment, the children were asked to complete some test tasks related to mathematics, reading and spatial perception skills.

It turned out that 12.7 percent of children taking in the experiment were born from mothers who had never consumed alcoholic beverages in their lives. 57.1 percent of mothers drank often, but not during pregnancy, 23.1 percent of mothers admitted that they used only light alcoholic drinks, and 7.2 percent of women said that they consumed even more than the recommended norm during pregnancy.

After comparing the test data from children whose mothers never drank alcohol and those whose mothers drank soft drinks, the scientists concluded that there were no significant differences between them.

“We did not find any negative consequences and deviations in 7-year-old children whose mothers used to drink light alcoholic beverages during pregnancy,” Professor Yvonne Kelly comments on the basis of research results.

“Nevertheless, the question of the level of alcohol consumption that could be called safe for expectant mothers remains unclear. Therefore, the best solution in this case is a complete rejection of alcohol during pregnancy, ”concludes Kelly.
